OLM VOLLE: There is only one gas and that is full throttle
She is 21 years old, has won almost everything you can win in junior mountain biking and is still only at the beginning of what will hopefully be a long career. The young Austrian Laura Stigger is an absolute exceptional talent on the mountain bike.

2020 was her first year in the UCI World Cup in the elite class. After a particularly challenging season with ups and downs, we met her for a short interview.
Hello Laura, an extraordinary year lies behind you. Looking back, what were your highlights? Absolutely. My second year in the elite class, the Olympics, Cape Epic – a lot happened. But my personal highlight was definitely the World Cup in Leogang. In the short race I exhausted myself physically and mentally and had to stop. There were so many friends and my family there … I put myself under unnecessary pressure and overdid it. So of course I was in a bad mood after the race. But I was all the happier when I came third in the cross-country race on Sunday!
You were also the first Austrian to finish on the podium since 2010. The 2021 season was an emotional rollercoaster for you. How do you find new motivation after a bitter defeat? I’ve been in the sport for a long time, so I know that defeats are simply part of the game. Of course, at first you are angry or disappointed. But then I think back to positive highlights. I draw enormous strength from these memories and the feelings associated with them and then get back on my bike fully motivated.
You and Sina Frei dominated the extreme Cape Epic race in South Africa and won every stage. How did you experience this crazy race? When I got injured at the World Cup in Snowshoe (USA), I didn’t want to end the season like this. I thought the Cape Epic would be a worthy finish. I had heard about the tough marathon race across South Africa, but had never been there. I am not used to such long races. When I’m on the bike three times a year for 5 hours in training, it’s already a lot. Here it was 8 days, 657 km and 17,250 metres of altitude! At the finish I almost felt a bit “unbreakable”. We were welcomed with champagne by our jubilant team and afterwards we celebrated properly!
Wow, after an 8-day race you still have energy to celebrate? Your motto “Olm Volle” really suits you. What’s on your agenda for 2022? I just want to be more consistent in my third elite season. I now know how a racing season works there and hope to make my results more consistent. A highlight will definitely be the World Championships in France, where I will compete for the last time in the U23 class.
Thank you Laura, we will definitely keep our fingers crossed for you.
